The Crow

Having started yoga practice a couple of months ago, I’m acutely aware that I’m still very much a beginner. The Youtube channel ‘Yoga With Adriene‘ has been wonderful and I can feel that my muscles are benefiting so much from a more focussed workout already.

However yesterday, at the end of one of Adriene’s videos, she zipped upwards into the Crow (Bakasana). As a cardio nut, I do tend to neglect working on my upper body strength (particularly my arms) and I found that I just could not get myself onto my hands! I’m sure I’ll be able to build up to this over a few weeks but I’m just wondering if anyone has any tips to prepare for and even make the move a little easier?

  1. hi there! i’m pretty beginner at yoga too and when i first saw bakasana i was amazed that anyone could do it! but now i can too, and you’ll get there. there are loads of great tips you can find on the internet (i always go to yoga journal first for their library of asanas, or try googling Kathryn Budig who is yoga queen of arm balances). for me the ‘aha moment’ was learning to really engage my abs and pull up to curve my back, but it took me a while. the pose is more about lifting up than arm strength. hope that helps. if you want to see what i’m up to in my yoga, i’m here: http://babycrowyoga.co.uk/ x

  2. Thank you so much, I’ll look up Kathryn a little later! That’s really helpful advice…I’m determined to conquer bakasana, so will be trying on a daily basis until I master it 🙂 x
